Following the conclusion of the Tuesday Night Boxing Series at the residence of West Indies batting legend Brian Lara, veteran boxing coach Winston Cox is hoping more sponsors will come on board to help the young T&T boxers develop their skills to sport their talent.

Amateur boxers in T&T were given the opportunity to showcase their talent when the T&T Amateur Boxing Association, LAY Management Group and the Pearl and Bunty Lara Foundation hosted the Tuesday Night Boxing event on January 5, 12 and 19 at Lady Chancellor Hill in Port-of-Spain.
After the final leg of the series, Cox was optimistic that more sponsors may be willing to help the young boxers in T&T.

Cox said, “After what happened here (Boxing Series) more sponsors will come on board to help the youths. Brian Lara tried his best and it was successful. We are asking more sponsors to come on board.”

Cox, who has coached T&T boxers Kirt Sinnette and Michael Alexander, said the Tuesday Night Boxing was an enjoyable experience. “I enjoyed every moment of the Tuesday Night Fights. It was well put together and I praise and thank Brian Lara for showcasing the youth to the public.

“It gives me more strength to work with youths in the depressed area to make something of themselves.

The only person who could have done this is Brian Charles Lara because he knows where he came from and he gave back to society by helping the youths, praise and thanks to Brian Lara.”

The T&T boxers gained experience during the Tuesday Night Boxing Series, squaring off against boxers from Guyana, St Lucia and Dominican Republic, a country that has produced many world class boxers. Alexander and Aaron Prince were the two standout boxers for T&T, with the latter being voted as the best overall fighter after winning his three fights during the series.

“We all learnt something from the experience. Aaron Prince has done a wonderful job for the three nights by winning his fights. He (Prince) is getting recognized now but before he was not getting any recognition. So I am hoping that Michael Alexander also and Aaron Prince makes it to the Olympics. We need to work on improving fitness and technique to get them there because Olympics are right around the corner.”

The veteran coach who has been involved in boxing for over 30 years, said he dedicates a lot of his time to youngsters in Sea Lots and wants to see them become respectable citizens.
