I have taken note of a letter by Soraya Aziz on price increases at the grocery.
Ms Aziz complained that two weeks ago Massy Stores raised the price of Svelty milk by 17 per cent and it appears that she has mistakenly assumed that milk is subject to VAT. She also spoke about an increase in the price of chicken.
For her information milk, whether full cream or skimmed, evaporated, reconstituted or powdered, is still zero-rated, as is all unprocessed food, such as chicken. There should have been no increase in the price of these items as a result of the new VAT system, therefore.
The full list of zero-rated items and other relevant information is available on the Ministry’s Web site at http://www.finance.gov.tt/ and in addition, the Ministry published the full zero-rated schedule in all three daily newspapers last week.
