My first year as Alta tutor

I have to admit that one of my most rewarding learning experiences began when I decided to become an Alta volunteer.

When I heard the advertisement on the radio one day at my office, I quickly jotted down the number and I called the following day. The procedures for becoming involved were explained to me and I could see no disadvantages to giving it a try, so I opted to take on the challenge.

After my successful interview I was assigned to observe the Level 1 class at the Belmont site for eight weeks. This solidified my decision to become a tutor. The techniques and team-teaching style were quite innovative. The care shown by the tutors (Miss Toney and Miss Thomas) whom I observed was refreshing. They ensured that no one was left behind.

The class was open to honest discussion and it fostered a family-like atmosphere. It warmed my heart to see individuals engaged in the exciting journey of reading and leaving each class having discovered something new.

The six-week training course (one day a week) that followed after Easter was intense, but fun. I must publically express my appreciation to the programme co-ordinator and her team of facilitators who maintained a high standard across the board.

While at the training course, I was reminded that I should never take for granted the opportunities afforded me academically. Reading and writing remain the keys that unlock the many possibilities that exist in this world. This is one of the many life lessons that I intend to share as I continue on my Alta journey.

My first year as a tutor seems to have gone by so quickly. It was a year that will be ever etched in my memory. To be a part of this interesting learning journey has been an honour. To be afforded the opportunity to impart, as well as receive knowledge was truly a joy.

My first year will not be my only year with the Alta programme. I am now mid-way through the first term of my second year.

I encourage you the reader to take that step to be a change agent. Listen to that voice within today and take that leap of faith. You can teach and reach those that need you most. If you have the time, then make this worthwhile investment. The rewards are far-reaching.
