Help our youth, lead by example

It is so heartbreaking when you read and hear so many unpleasant stories concerning the behaviour of our nation’s youths. Gone are the days when young people will gather to listen and take advice from those who are senior to them. I remember when growing up, as a child you could not conceive of being insubordinate to your teacher or anyone in your community. In addition to being corrected by that person, when you get home news of your behaviour was already there. Rest assured, you would be dealt with a second time. That kept many of us in check.

Let me say this, we need to put the responsibility of raising a child where it belongs, and that is the home. The school system and the church are only aids. Parents must take full responsibility.

How can we help our youth? First of all, there must be a father figure. Now I need to congratulate those single mothers who have done and are still doing an excellent job in bring up children all by themselves, and also those excellent mothers of our nation. Men, we need to fulfil our role as fathers to our children by being there for them. Too often we shun our responsibility and the children pay the price.

Secondly, children need the hand of love. Do we take the time to tell and show our children that we love and care for them? That is important for it is that hand and loving words they will remember when they are tempted to take the wrong path. Genuine love is a language all by itself, even when children go astray. Do not discard them but bring them back with love. When last have you hugged your child and said these words, “I love you” and “I am here for you.” Let them know it.

Thirdly, learn to listen to them, they too have a story to tell. This is how you get information and demonstrate that you really care about them. Everyone loves to be heard, sometimes we apply too much of the “iron fist.” Instil God in your children’s lives, do not depend on the church. Lead by example. Yes, the church is there to help, but your influence is stronger as parents. Now all of these we can do, why not practise them.
