For the last three years I have required a CT scan annually to assist with the treatment of severe dental injuries I sustained. Last year I submitted an insurance claim in the amount of $1,000. It was not my first, and similar claims prior to this had been submitted and honoured without question.
However, for the last year I have been getting the most ridiculous delay and the company refuses to pay the measly $800 owed with no explanation offered.
My current frustration stems from the great inconvenience of visiting the brokers frequently for the last year, with my young child in tow, to hear the constant refrain of “no cheque yet.” It also stems from the dismal realisation that despite the $295 I spend monthly on health insurance, that I have no real assurance of financial coverage at the time that I need it the most. Why do broker companies and insurance firms take the money of hard working citizens like myself but fail to deliver their service in accordance with the contracts made with clients?
Is it because they feel that normal people like me have little recourse and no one will listen? Perhaps this is true, but in the meantime I have terminated my policy and I will continue to follow up on my cheque with child in tow, on the principle that companies such as these must be held accountable.
So forget health insurance, I now walk around with my fingers crossed that I will be well forever and that failing this, that the health center and the General Hospital will be good to me.
