Top junior players Nabeel Mohammed and Yin Lee Assang will compete for singles titles when the RBC Junior Tennis tournament concludes at the Trinidad Country Club in Maraval, today.
Mohammed and Lee Assang, who both won singles titles at last year’s RBC tournament, recorded contrasting victories in the semifinals yesterday.
Mohammed, who is the defending boys Under-18 champion, defeated Keshan Moonasar 6–3, 6–4 to advance to the finals. He will face Scott Hackshaw in the final, who outlasted Gianluc Robinson 6–1, 7–5.
Lee Assang battled her way into the girls U-16 final with a 6–2, 4–6, 10–6 win over Abigail Jones. Lee Assang captured the girls U-12 singles crown last year. Celeste Steele also booked a spot in the girls U-16 final with a 7–5, 7–6 victory over Victoria Koylass.
Former RBC champion Che Andrews was eliminated from the boys U-16 singles semifinals. Andrews, who won the boys U-14 singles last year, lost to Joshua Arnold 2–6, 2–6. Arnold will play Kobe James in the final, after James got past Flynn Von Walda 6–2, 6–1.
Ethan Jeary will aim to make amends after losing in the boys U-12 singles final last year. Jeary progressed to the boys U-14 singles final with a 1–4, 4–1, 11–9 win over Adam Ramkissoon. He will have a tough contest, as Samuel West breezed past Alexander Thorp 4–0, 4–0 in the other semifinal. Action begins today from 9 am.
